Coconuts have provided health and healing benefits to Asian, Pacific and African communities for generations. Considered a āsuperfoodā by some, coconuts provide a good source of protein and natural fats packing a powerful nutritional punch.Ā Coconuts are also a source of certain minerals, including iron and potassium.
The coconut palm tree is revered by many cultures as āThe Tree of Lifeā, because of the multitude of benefits it provides to over a third of the worldās population. Its roots, fronds, trunk and husk are used for a variety of purposes such as for shelter, fuel, rope, paper pulp, furniture, household utensils and handicrafts.
But the most sacred part of the tree is its fruit, the coconut. Within its husk is the water and meat providing energy and a source of natural fatsĀ and minerals. The coconut is recognized worldwide as being a highly functional food, providing a whole range of produce including oils, sugar, flour, water, milk, syrups, vinegars and sauces.
Hydration
Dubbed as āNatureās Sports Drinkā,Ā coconut water is a natural isotonic drink.Ā It contains many of the essential salts and minerals inĀ sports drinks,Ā but in their natural form.
Blood Sugar Level
Coconut oil is bursting with natural fats that provide a significant energy boost. These medium chain fats are broken down to use as a ready energy source. Unrefined coconut sugar is also a significant source of energy, but may not spike your blood sugar levels as much as refined white sugar, due to its lower glycaemic index rating.
Heart Health
Virgin coconut oil is high in medium chain triglycerides (MCTs), including lauric acid, caprylic acid and capric acid. MCTs are a unique form of dietary fat and recent studies have suggested that they may have a positive effect on the body when consumed as part of a healthy diet.
